Why This Alcohol-Free Spirit Might Change Your Mind About Alternatives

We have seen a significant increase in interest around alternatives to alcohol. Starting with the 0% beer boom and now seeing an alcohol-free spirit boom, we now have a real choice about what we want to drink when we aren’t drinking.

For those who may be skeptical after trying an alcohol-free spirit they didn’t like, I always make the comparison to the world of alcohol. Some people may love a pink gin but it may well be someone else’s idea of a nightmare - dry gin all the way for them. Some may enjoy spicy gin like an Ophir and some may prefer fruity gin like a Brockmans.

Given this is the case, why would it be any different in the world of alcohol-free? The difference is, it may just take us a little longer to find what exactly we like best as most of us know what alcohol we do and don’t like. With the alcohol-free spirit space expanding daily we have an incredible opportunity to experiment, taste and discover with innovation being at the forefront.

We are no longer limited to one option but to hundreds.

JOMO’s June Box presented Mahala Botanical to members. A South African 0% triple distilled spirit that incorporates ingredients native to South Africa.

Mahala Botanical bursts with flavour and cuts through any mixer or cocktail put in its way. If flavour is what you are looking for, this is the one for you.

Another common misconception around alcohol-free spirits is the sugar content. ‘I’d rather not drink alcohol free drinks as they are packed full of sugar’. Again, if we make a comparison to the world of alcohol, we know a G&T has more sugar and calories than a Gin & Soda water or a Gin & Light Tonic.

As new brands launch, there are increasingly more focused on high quality ingredients and keeping the sugar to a minimum without any additives. You can continue to keep the sugars low by watching what you pair it with.

Mahala Botanical have absolutely thought about this by creating a spirit bursting with flavour and 0g of sugar. Yes, that’s right, 0g and 0 calories.

So, how have they managed to create such a fantastic flavour?

Well, it is completely free from colourants, artificial flavours and sugar meaning there is only room for the good stuff. Using clove, honey bush, orange, Angelica root, buchu, cardamom, cassia bark and pelargonium citronella, Mahala Botanical’s flavours are enhanced through a light premium tonic and garnished with a lemon peel or wedge creating the M&T.

We paired it with a tonic naturally sweetened by Stevia creating a refreshing, yet still complex serve.

Given the honey bush, we found Mahala worked really nicely with honey and lemon notes leading to us creating ‘The Apple of My Eye’ Cocktail of the Month!

This paired 50ml Mahala Botanical over ice with Soho Juice’s Apple, Lemon & Honey and a dried apple garnish. This can even be shaken given the still nature of Soho Juices.

We hope you enjoy this new and innovative spirit to market which can now be found on JOMO Club’s bottle store.
