A Natural, Sugar and Calorie Free Mixer to Pair With Your Alcohol-Free Spirit

We all know 3/4 of our drink is the mixer thanks to Fever Tree (or maybe common sense, but well done to Fever Tree for bringing it to our attention).

That means, we can choose a natural alcohol-free spirit with low sugar and little ingredients in the bottle, but when pairing it with a mixer that is sky high in sugar and artificial ingredients, we are sort of defeating the object.

So, what should we be looking for when choosing our mixers? Ultimately, it depends on what flavours, ingredients and outcome you are looking for. However if we are looking to keep our sugars low and our mixers natural, here are a few things to be aware of:

  1. Sugar, sucrose, dextrose, fructose, galactose, glucose, lactose - they’re all sugar.

  2. Preservatives and artificial sweeteners. Researchers have stated these are bad for your health. The more natural the better.

  3. Calories. If you are avoiding the sugar content, you are likely going to find a lower calorie mixer too. A mixer high in sugar usually results in a mixer high in calories too.

Now what?

There are now a huge array of tonic waters and mixers on the market. We have wonderful consumer choice when looking to complement a spirit. The supermarket shelves are packed full and that is only a tiny percentage of the mixers available.

JOMO Club’s June Box brought the incredible Gallybird paired with Mahala Botanical’s alcohol-free spirit. Initially attracted by the flawless branding followed by the ‘what’s in the bottle’ story and ethos, we knew we had to share it with members.

On a mission to create a high quality tonic water without the sugar, calories and artificial sweeteners, Gallybird have created a completely natural tonic water.

So, where did the idea come from?

Founder Fo was astonished to find light premium tonic waters were still often packed with sugar and the slimline versions included artificial ingredients such as aspartame. Indian tonic waters contain over four teaspoons of sugar (imagine putting that in your tea and having a few cups in a row!) While the skinny versions still contained around two teaspoons. Fo went on a quest to create a purely plant based tonic water. No nasties, no calories, no sugar.

Introducing Stevia.

Stevia leaf extract has been used for centuries replicating sugar in a natural, calorie free way. With awareness growing, health-conscious consumers are now becoming more aware of its uses and benefits. Suitable for diabetics too, it has no effect on insulin levels.

When speaking with Fo she tells us “We have carefully selected each extract infused in these blends for its taste and nutritional value to create all-natural tonic waters full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and plat power. Our Indian tonic is classically blended with the soft bitter bit of quinine and crafted to enhance not overpower the chosen spirit. The stimulating blend with white tea & rosemary extracts is herbal with a touch of plant derived sweetness. These blends are naturally zero with ingredients that are grown not made and contain interesting botanicals that have health and wellness benefits”
