Five Alcohol-Free Spiked Hot Chocolate Recipes

Written by Kathryn Stone

There is nothing quite as cosy in the winter as a warm mug filled with hot chocolate. Whether you bring it for a winter walk in a thermos or cuddle your hot chocolate whilst sitting in front of the fire, it is without a doubt, one of the most comforting drinks.

But sometimes you might want to add a little something to make your hot chocolate exciting. A boozy hot chocolate, or a slutty hot chocolate as my friend calls it, is the perfect winter drink. And if you are sober, or a mindful drinker there is no reason you need to miss out on a boozy-flavoured hot chocolate.

So without further ado, here are five of our top alcohol-free boozy hot chocolate recipes.

If you are on a time crunch or feeling lazy you can use instant hot chocolate for all of these recipes, but if you have more time or are feeling fancy then make yourself a luxurious hot chocolate!

Alcohol-Free Coffee Liqueur Chocolate

If you love the taste of an adult mocha drink then you are in luck with this very easy alcohol-free boozy hot chocolate.

All you need to do is make a hot chocolate in whichever way you prefer. You can use instant hot chocolate, melt chocolate into milk, use cocoa, or use your coffee machine. Once you have your steaming mug of hot chocolate add a shot or two of Lyre’s alcohol-free Coffee Originale. It looks best when served in an Irish Coffee mug, topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

How does this taste any different from just adding coffee? Well, Lyre’s Coffee Originale spirit does not just taste like coffee. It has underlying flavours to help it taste like alcohol, and mixes spice, caramel, toasted nuts and vanilla, to make a delicious, Kahlua-type spirit.

Non-Alcoholic Red Wine Hot Chocolate

Wine in hot chocolate? How could that possibly taste nice? Well, I assure you that although it might sound a little out there, it is actually a great combination for an alcohol-free boozy hot chocolate!

Ingredients

150ml of any milk of your choice (vegan milk works just as well)

1 Tbsp cocoa powder

2-3 Tbsp sugar (for a deeper flavour use soft brown sugar)

25g Dark chocolate

150ml Alcohol-free red wine (such as Noughty Rouge, Nine Elms or Odd Bird)

Method

  1. Heat the milk, wine, cocoa powder, sugar and dark chocolate in a small pan. As a side note - the amount of sugar you use will depend on how sweet your alcohol-free wine is. For a fruitier wine, you will need less sugar, with a dryer wine you will need more.

  2. Stir over medium heat until the chocolate has dissolved. Use a whisk to stop the cocoa powder from clumping.

  3. Pour into a mug and top with whipped cream and garnish with grated orange peel.

Mulled Hot Chocolate with Rum

You’ve heard of mulled wine, you’ve heard of mulled cider, well, now we bring you mulled hot chocolate! This spicy, chocolatey drink, warms you up with every mouthful you take.

Ingredients

300ml milk (vegan milk works too)

70ml double cream

50g chopped dark chocolate

1 Stick Cinnamon

3 Cloves

1 Star anise

Grated nutmeg

2 tbsp alcohol-free rum (such as MYTH, Lyre’s or Clean Co)

1 tbsp GIMBER

Method

  1. Add the spices, milk, double cream, non-alcoholic rum and Gember to a pan and heat up.

  2. Melt the chocolate into the mixture on medium heat.

  3. Pour into a mug and top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Stout Hot Chocolate

For a heavy, creamy and comforting hot chocolate, this stout hot chocolate is a perfect choice.

Ingredients

Hot Chocolate (made with one of the above recipes)

A non-alcoholic stout beer (such as Guinness 0%)

250ml Heavy cream

1 tbsp Sugar

1 tbsp non-alcoholic stout (such as Guinness 0%)

Method

  1. Heat your alcohol-free stout beer on medium heat on the stove. Bring it to a boil and whisk it until it has reduced by about a quarter.

  2. Make a hot chocolate using whichever recipe you prefer;

  3. Take this off the heat and stir in your reduced stout beer. Add in more for a slightly bitterer flavour;

  4. Best served with non-alcoholic boozy whipped cream. To make this take your chilled heavy cream and whip it either by hand or with a mixer. Fold in the sugar and non-alcoholic stout flavouring.

  5. Alternatively, serve it with a big dollop of ice cream.

Hot Chocolate Orange

Chocolate orange is the classic combination. So if you want to drink the equivalent of Terry’s chocolate orange, then try this recipe out. It uses Crossips citrus spirit, which has a mix of orange, lemon, grapefruit and ginger, and brings the perfect tanginess to make your chocolate orange hot chocolate taste fruity and rich.

Ingredients

60g Dark Terry’s Chocolate Orange

350ml milk of your choice

2 tbsp Crossip Citrus spirit

1 tbsp GIMBER

Optional sugar to taste

Method

  1. Heat the milk on medium heat;

  2. Add Terry’s chocolate orange and stir it into the milk;

  3. Add the Crossip Citrus Spirit and Gember and stir in;

  4. Serve with a sliced orange garnish.

Stay warm this winter with an alcohol-free, yet adult-tasting hot chocolate!
