Assess your relationship with alcohol this January

Dry January is now a widely recognised and respected month across the UK with more than 4 million people attempting to go dry! In 2020, it had 10.048 media attentions with a strong movement toward changing negative drinking cultures in the UK.

Started by Alcohol Change in 2013 with 4,000 people as a one month alcohol free challenge, the intention was to encourage the mindset of not giving something up, but getting something back - your fun, energy and calm.

With drinking culture still warped in the UK, Dry January for many is a starting point of sobriety or understanding the concept of mindful drinking, with the month fast becoming a socially accepted part of our culture. With little judgement, Dry January is a fantastic way to ease into sobriety without the judgement (still an issue many admit they face at the beginning of their journey).

Not only this, but it is a perfect opportunity to press the reset button, understand self-discipline and understand your relationship with alcohol. 70% of people who took part in Dry January said they slept better and 66% said they had better energy.

When we asked the JOMO community why they were taking part in Dry January this year, the number one reason was to experiment with new flavours and ingredients minus the alcohol (music to our ears - JOMO family we love you), followed by getting fit and healthy in January and beyond!

In the lead up to Dry January this year, it was evident it was going to be bigger than ever with not only more people taking part, but more brands, restaurants and businesses supporting the movement too! Sat on the sofa in our PJs over Christmas we had a smile on our faces as Bax Botanics were reviewed and sipped on ITV and we paused and pressed rewind as we beamed with joy watching Tanqueray’s 0% advert on TV.

Greater awareness and visibility means normalising not drinking. Normalising not drinking means more people get to make the choices they want to make without judgement.

If you are taking on Dry January this year for the first time ever, we would encourage you to have some fun with it. Try not to struggle through the month thinking about what you are missing but think about what you can put in. Try the alcohol-free spirits out there - it is a whole new world.

If you are a cocktail person, whip something up. One of our favourites is the JOMO Mule. 25ml GIMBER, 50ml Wilfred’s topped with soda and garnished with a lime. Try the ready to drink cocktails - we love Savyll Drinks.

If you are a G&T person, why not try a S&T (Sea Arch and Tonic) or how about entering into the CBD world - it’s fairly wonderful - try out Maria & Craig’s, a member favourite.

Have fun. Invite your friends and family over. Make them something tasty or create something together. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself and ease into the month - it is the first one of the year.

If you don’t know where to start, JOMO Club put in the work for you and carefully navigate the world of alcohol-free to select the best non-alcoholic spirits pairing them with the best mixers, garnishes, snacks and a 20 page members magazine.
