Why You Will Stay More Hydrated by Avoiding Alcohol this Summer

The UK had its hottest June on record and July 3rd was the hottest day ever recorded globally. There is no mistake that summer is getting hotter. And that means staying hydrated is more and more important. But how can you stay hydrated this summer?

Let’s be real, we all struggle with drinking enough water. It is just hard. But something that makes staying hydrated just that much harder is alcohol. So let’s talk about how to stay more hydrated this summer by lowering your alcohol intake!

Alcohol Dehydrates

Alcohol is a Diuretic. That means that drinking alcohol causes your body to remove fluids at a much quicker rate than usual.

So how exactly does this work? Well, alcohol reduces the amount of vasopressin your body is able to make. Vasopressin is an important anti-diuretic which helps your body hold onto water.

By limiting how much vasopressin your body makes, alcohol exacerbates the diuretic effect meaning that your body will remove fluid from your blood through your renal system (kidney, bladder and ureters) more quickly. This causes dehydration.

As the water disappears more quickly your blood alcohol content rises in proportion which of cause exacerbates the whole effect!

How To Stay Hydrated in the Summer Heat

So how can you stay hydrated in the summer? Well, luckily there are lots of ways to keep your body hydrated in the hot temperatures.

Drink Water

The UK government's advice is to drink around 1.2 litres of water (or other hydrating fluids) a day. If you are exercising or it s particularly hot then you should drink even more than that. This equates to about 6-8 glasses of fluid a day.

Drinks such as coffee, tea and alcohol, which have a diuretic effect, should not be included in this.

Drink Hydrating Drinks

Some drinks are more hydrating than others. That is because they contain more potassium and other electrolytes (minerals that dissolve in water and create electrically charged particles), both of which help speed up hydration. Drinks that help you hydrate faster include:

  • Coconut water

  • Electrolyte drinks

  • Aloe Vera Juice

  • Soy milk

  • Some herbal teas

Avoid Or Lower Alcohol Consumption

As we have mentioned, drinking alcohol dehydrates your body. So a great way to stay more hydrated this summer is to lower your alcohol consumption or go completely alcohol-free.

By going completely alcohol-free you only need to focus on hydrating yourself. You no longer need to try and compensate for the dehydrating effects of alcohol. That means you need to drink significantly less fluids and are more likely to stay well hydrated.

If you do choose to continue drinking some alcohol, then a good way to stay hydrated is to drink a glass of water for every glass of alcohol you drink. That way you are able to dilute the effects of the alcohol on your hydration levels.

Eat Fruits and Vegetables That are High in Liquid

To make sure your body is fully hydrated you can even get fluids from the food you eat. If you eat lots of fruits and vegetables that are high in liquid content then you provide your body with a little extra fluid.

Additionally, fruits and vegetables contain many minerals that have electrolyte properties, so they help you hydrate faster too!

Enjoy Alcohol-Free Beverages

The best way to get your fluids in is to have a really enjoyable drink. And luckily you don’t need alcohol for that. There are now over 500 alcohol-free spirits on the market, so you can make yourself a refreshing summer cocktail completely free from alcohol. That way not only can you enjoy a sophisticated and delicious drink, you are keeping yourself hydrated and healthy too! Stay hydrated in style!

Even better still, some alcohol-free drinks, such as alcohol-free beer, are so good at hydrating you that Olympic athletes are using them in their recovery.
