9 Reasons Why We Love Alcohol-Free Alternatives

By Kathryn Stone.

One of the most common questions I get asked about alcohol-free alternatives is why? A lot of people understand why you might not drink alcohol but seem to find it hard to understand why people would want an alcohol-free replacement drink.

So here are just some of the reasons mindful drinkers or the sober curious might choose an alcohol-free replacement.

To Enjoy A More Sophisticated Drink

Before the big boom in alcohol-free drinks, as a non-drinker, the only options for soft drinks were overly sugary drinks. You could get juice or something like Coca-Cola, Fanta or Sprite. All of these drinks have their time and place, but sometimes you want to enjoy a more sophisticated flavour profile.

A more sophisticated flavour profile is something that alcohol provides, but nowadays so do alcohol-free alternatives. Now that so many alcohol-free drinks exist you are able to avoid hyper-sugary drinks and enjoy a more subtly flavoured, layered and adult drink without having to drink alcohol.

To Enjoy A Range of Drinks

Following on from the above point, alcohol-free drinks now come in so many different flavours. They are based on so many different alcohols. By drinking alcohol-free replacements you can now enjoy a whole range of different taste profiles.

There are hundreds of different alcohol-free drinks nowadays, from alcohol-free wine to the hundreds of non-alcoholic gins and aperitifs in different flavours, to things like non-alcoholic absynthe and coffee liqueur. Drinking alcohol-free replacements really lets you access a plethora of different flavours.

Because You Miss The Taste of Alcohol

If you are somebody who used to drink alcohol and enjoy a cold beer or a refreshing gin and tonic in the evening, it is only natural that you might miss the taste of alcohol if you can no longer drink it.

Luckily nowadays there are so many good replacements for any alcoholic drink. They might not be 100% accurate, but you are able to satisfy the need for a specific taste. You can still enjoy a non-alcoholic cold beer, a 0% Guinness, or an alcohol-free gin and tonic, all without needing to touch a drop of alcohol.

To Fit In

It can be difficult when you decide not to drink alcohol. People can bother and try and force you to drink, people can judge you as boring, and you often stick out as the only one not drinking. If you don’t want to deal with all of that, but still don’t want to drink alcohol, you can drink alcohol-free replacements. These often look identical to, or similar enough to alcohol for people not to realise that you are not drinking alcohol.

Alcohol-free alternatives can be a great way to fit in with your surroundings without compromising your drinking goals.

To Keep The Ritual

Many people have rituals based around alcohol. To name but a few, some couples drink a nightcap together every night, people drink champagne when they make a toast, some people always drink a mimosa on Christmas morning, and for others mulled wine is an essential firework night drink.

When you quit drinking alcohol it can throw off rituals that you’ve had for years and really enjoy. Alcohol-free alternatives can help you keep these important rituals in your life whilst still avoiding alcohol.

Because They Taste Good

Let's be real here, it is not a chore to drink alcohol-free drinks. Many of them taste delicious, have complex and mindfully created flavour profiles, and are just really enjoyable to drink.

Of course, you might not like every alcohol-free drink you try, but that is the same with alcohol. It is also possible that some people who dismiss non-alcoholic drinks only tried them several years ago before the art developed to where it is today.

People who do not drink alcohol-free replacements really are missing out on a whole range of tasty, subtle and refreshing drinks.

Because Making Cocktails is Fun

Making cocktails and experimenting with different flavour combinations can be a lot of fun. So when you can no longer drink alcohol, or when you choose to embrace the sober lifestyle, you can be losing out on a creative and enjoyable hobby.

That is why alcohol-free replacements can be so great. You can still play around with different flavour combinations, make all the classic cocktails and try new ones, but without the need to touch a drop of alcohol. The sky really is the limit when it comes to alcohol-free cocktail recipes.

For The Health Benefits

Now we all know the health benefits of not drinking alcohol, but some people choose to drink alcohol-free drinks because of the health benefits of the drinks themselves. Many non-alcoholic replacements contain a plethora of nutrients and minerals that are really good for us including:

  • Antioxidants

  • Vitamins A, B, C & D

  • Electrolytes

  • Magnesium

  • Macrobiotics and probiotics

  • and many more.

So this can be a great reason to crack open an alcohol-free replacement. Not only do you get a delicious drink you reap the health benefits.

Some Alcohol-Free Drinks Give You A Buzz

There are increasingly alcohol-free drinks that can provide a buzz or help you relax without the negative effects of alcohol.

Some of these drinks include CBD which is known to help relax and destress people. So drinking an alcohol-free drink with CBD is the perfect thing to do after a stressful week.

A drink like Sentia GABA mimics the effects of alcohol without the need for the negative effects of alcohol. It does this by getting your body to release GABA, the hormone which creates the happy, pleasurable feelings that you get from having had one or two drinks.
