How snacks are following our healthier lifestyles

With a spotlight on the mother of all snacks - the crisp.

Crisps - they are there for us. They might be plain, they could be salty, chilli might be in there, but a bowl of crisps with a drink in your hand..wonderful.

We have been spoilt for choice over the past few years with not only so many different brands and flavours to choose from, but also different variations and the way they are made too.

We have potato, corn, plantain, beetroot, lentil, protein, seaweed, cauliflower, chickpeas, rice.. I could go on, but it seems as though crisps have adapted to our healthier lifestyles with a focus on those rich in vitamins, protein and lower in carbs, saturated fat, salt and sugar.

One particular variety that entered into my life recently was Plantain.

They’re a rich source of fibre, with vitamins A, C (which help keep your skin healthy and benefit your immune system) and B-6 with the minerals magnesium and potassium. It’s a hidden superfood and I just never knew it?

Plantain crisps are particularly popular in South America being a Colombian favourite! In Peru and Ecuador, they offer bags to passing cars.

Two women leading the plantain chip way is Daniela and Natalia - founders of Loro Crisps. Raised in Colombia, they decided to bring their favourite Colombian snack to the UK with their brand mascot Pepe the parrot positioned at the heart of Loro Crisps (Parrots apparently love plantain - who knew - if you didn’t trust us about how tasty they were, you gotta trust a parrot?!)

Loro Crisps are direct from Colombia, grown in the tropical fields of the Uraba region. They truly are bringing the colour, vibrancy and personality of Colombia through their brand and flavour!

Not only that, they are gluten free, vegetarian friendly, vegan and full of natural flavour.

With five to choose from, we have Latin Chilli, Quimbaya Limon, Cassava Sea Salt, Uraba Sunshine and Zipaquira Salt.

Daniela says her favourites are the Uraba Sunshine and Natalia’s are the limon - ours are the chilli.

They are just delicious to eat by themselves but if like us you love nachos, we have put together a recipe for you to enjoy..

Plantain Crisps Nacho Recipe:

Ingredients:

Plantain Chips 85g (we use Loro’s)

Grated cheese 43g

2 tbsp salsa

1/2 avocado, diced

2 tbsp black olives, sliced

Sour cream (optional)

Chicken or beef 32g (if you want a meat option)

Method:

  • Set the oven to 180.

  • Get a tray and spread the plantain crisps on baking paper. Add the cheese and meat.

  • Cook for 5 minutes with the door open until the cheese is melted and the crisps have browned on the edges, making sure not to burn.

  • Top with salsa, avocado, olives and sour cream.

Keep posted for a JOMO Box coming soon where Loro Crips may or may not be making an appearance.. You can also have your very own supply directly from Loro Crisps’ website.
