How Celebrities are Helping the Alcohol-Free Movement

In recent years, many people in the public eye have openly shared the facts about their alcohol-free lifestyle. From Tom Holland, to Bessie Carter, to Ed Sheeran, we repeatedly hear a similar message: “Life without alcohol is fun”. The increasing number of celebrities hopping on the sober-curious bandwagon is really helping to normalise living an alcohol-free lifestyle.

What is the Alcohol-Free Movement?

The alcohol-free movement is a growing movement of people who are choosing to live without alcohol, whatever the reason. People choose not to drink alcohol for many different reasons, including health, addiction, or not wanting to. For some, after attempting a ‘dry’ challenge, they realise that avoiding alcohol just makes them feel better or happier.

When looking at the alcohol-free movement you might also see the terms ‘sober curious’ and ‘mindful drinking’. Sober curious is a term used to show the potential of sobriety to surprise you and bring you unexpected. The idea is to get curious about the ways in which choosing not to drink at a specific moment could change everything.

Some people prefer to call themselves mindful drinkers as they are not completely sober. To be a mindful drinker you need to be reflective and intentional about how much and when you drink alcohol. The idea of this is to choose to drink when you want. That way you can avoid drinking as the result of negative factors like pressure or stress.

How are Celebrities Helping to Normalise the Alcohol-Free Lifestyle

People in the public eye, have a huge influence on what is cool and what is acceptable. So it is no surprise that the increasing number of celebrities embracing sober curiosity and an alcohol-free lifestyle is useful.

Normalising Sober Living

When Tom Holland doesn’t need alcohol to be charming, when Ed Sheeran doesn’t need alcohol to be a talented musician and when Calvin Harris doesn’t need alcohol to be one of the most prolific music producers of recent years, it changes the narrative.

Instead of drinking alcohol being seen as the epitome of cool, people with influence are beginning to show that you can be cool and have fun without alcohol. It helps to normalise living an alcohol-free lifestyle and shows us that there is no shame in that. Many people in the public eye are even coming out and saying that life without alcohol is better and happier.

The more people who come out, take a stance on drinking alcohol and show people it is okay not to drink, the easier it is for others to decide to live an alcohol-free lifestyle.

Being Open About Struggles with Alcohol

One way some sober celebrities are helping the alcohol-free movement is by being open about their struggles with alcohol. It is well-known that living a celebrity lifestyle leads many people to have a toxic relationship with alcohol. But increasingly, in a world where healthy living is everywhere, more people are talking about their struggles with alcohol.

There is a lot of shame and guilt around having an addiction. It can feel like a very lonely and helpless position to be in. When people, especially people who are celebrated and idolised, are open about their own struggles with alcohol, it creates space for other people to acknowledge their difficulties with alcohol too. When there is less guilt and shame, addiction is easier to address and deal with.

Watching people in the public eye find joy in sobriety and managing to kick addictions and grey area drinking can help to empower and inspire other people in that same position.

Creating or Endorsing Alcohol-Free Drinks

There is an increasing number of people in the public eye creating alcohol-free drinks brands or endorsing already existing brands. This really is using the power of influence in a positive way, to help improve people’s lives.

People like Bessie Carter, Emily Laing and Genevieve Chenneour, who are collaborating with JOMO for sober October, are really helping to normalise the alcohol-free movement and show the joy of living an alcohol-free lifestyle.
