JOMO’s Favourite Alcohol Free Christmas Drinks
Written by Kathryn Stone.
There is nothing we like more in the festive season than alcohol-free hot Christmas drinks to warm you up cold and the dark, or a non-alcoholic festive cocktail to help with the merry-making.
Just because you are having a booze-free Christmas or a sober December doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy some traditional Christmas drinks, non-alcoholic style!
So if you are struggling for inspiration and want some non-alcoholic seasonal drink ideas to make the most out of your alcohol-free Christmas, then check out our non-alcoholic winter warmers and Christmas mocktails.
1. Alcohol-Free Mulled Wine
Mulled wine is the classic drink for a cold, December evening. This alcohol-free mulled wine is the perfect drink to share in front of the fire, or whilst wandering around a Christmas market.
Ingredients:
1 bottle of alcohol-free red wine such as Noughty Rouge, Nine Elms, Oddbird or SENTIA.
Half an orange
Half a lemon
1 cinnamon stick
3 cloves
2cm of fresh ginger, sliced or 50ml of GIMBER or Root2Ginger
Brown sugar to taste
Method:
Pour the alcohol-free wine and the ginger into a pan. Then add half an orange and half a lemon sliced, alongside your mulling spices.
Stir over low to medium heat until this is hot, but not boiling.
Add brown sugar to taste. Serve in a glass or ceramic mug. To garnish add some dried lemon or orange slices, or a cinnamon stick.
2. Alcohol-Free Mulled Cider
Mulled cider has to be my favourite in the range of non-alcoholic mulled Christmas drinks. Perhaps less traditional than its sibling, mulled wine, it has a softer, fruitier and less sharp taste.
The methods and ingredients are almost identical to making non-alcoholic mulled Christmas drinks like the mulled wine above. The biggest difference is that you use alcohol-free cider (such as Smashed), or apple juice, instead of alcohol-free wine.
To add a little depth to the flavour try adding alcohol-free dark spiced rum (such as Lyre’s or MYTH Drinks) to taste. This can add a little fire and darkness to the drink so that you can really enjoy your booze-free Christmas with a deep and flavourful drink!
3. Hot Ginger Toddy
A hot toddy is the classic winter drink to warm you up. Unlike traditional mulled drinks, this is more hydrating and a lot lighter, making it the perfect alcohol-free drink for just before bed.
Ingredients:
2cm peeled and sliced fresh ginger or 30ml GIMBER
Half a lemon sliced
50ml alcohol-free whisky (such as Lyre’s American Malt or CROSSIP Dandy Smoke)
Hot water
1 clove and cinnamon stick for garnish
Method:
Pour 400ml of boiling water into a jug and add the peeled ginger and sliced lemon. Cover with a lid and let sit for a few minutes.
Divide the whisky between two heatproof glasses. Add a stick of cinnamon to each.
Top each glass with the boiling water, ginger and lemon mix.
Add cloves as garnish. To make it sweeter you can add honey to taste.
4. Candy Cane and Cranberry Margarita
This Christmas mocktail takes all the most important Christmas flavours such as cranberry, orange and peppermint and puts it together in one delicious, festive alcohol-free cocktail.
Ingredients:
25 ml Alcohol-free Orange liqueur (such as Lyre’s Orange Sec)
50 ml Alcohol-free white Tequila (such as Mockingbird Spirits, Fleure Smoked Agave or Lyre’s Agave Blanco)
50 ml Cranberry juice
Juice of half a lime
A handful of frozen cranberries
2 drops of Peppermint extract
Crushed candy canes
Ice
1 tsp clear honey/syrup/marshmallow fluff
Method:
Take a margarita glass and gently paint the rim with your clear honey, syrup or marshmallow fluff. Once coated turn it upside down onto a plate covered in crushed candy canes. This will coat your rim with crushed candy cane. Put this in the fridge to cool and harden.
Add everything but the frozen fruit into your cocktail shaker and shake until cold and combined.
Take your glasses out of the fridge and add a handful of frozen cranberries to each glass. Strain the mixture from the shaker into your glass and enjoy.
5. A Spicy, Spiked Hot Chocolate
There are so many delicious alcohol-free “boozy” hot chocolates out there, but for now, we will stick with an old classic. This booze-free Christmas drink will warm your cockles when it gets cold this winter.
Ingredients:
500 ml whole milk or alternative, dairy-free milk
125 g dark chocolate
1 chilli
2 shots of alcohol-free dark rum (such as MYTH Drinks or Lyre’s)
1 tsp ground cinnamon
Method:
Add one lightly crushed chilli and milk to your pan. Cook until it is lightly boiling.
Remove from the heat and stir in the cinnamon and chocolate. Let this sit and infuse for a few minutes.
Remove the chilli and pour your hot chocolate into two mugs. Add a shot of alcohol-free rum to each mug.
Top with whipped cream, marshmallows and a powdering of cocoa powder to make this look just like the indulgent treat it is.
6. Alcohol-free Christmas Punch
If you are catering for a big group, or want a beautiful centrepiece for your table then this non-alcoholic Christmas punch is a must-have.
Ingredients:
A bag of ice
1 litre of sweetened cranberry juice
500 ml orange juice
Juice of 2 limes
2 bottles of alcohol-free sparkling such as Noughty or ALT
400 ml of alcohol-free rum, brandy or vodka such as MYTH Drinks, Lyre’s or ANON’s Christmas Pudding Spirit
250 ml ginger ale
3 Sliced lemons
3 sliced limes
Seeds from one pomegranate
100g frozen cranberries
A few sprigs of mint
Method:
Add the ice to your punch bowl.
Add in all of your juices and juice the two limes. Mix in the ginger ale.
Add your fruit slices and frozen fruits.
Pour in your alcohol-free sparkling wine and the non-alcoholic spirit of your choice.
Add a ladle to the punch bowl and top with a few sprigs of mint.
7. Cranberry Champagne Fizz
To finish the year in style, make this alcohol-free mocktail: a cranberry and champagne fizz for a fruity and classy New Year's Eve drink.
Ingredients:
30 ml sweetened cranberry juice
120 ml alcohol-free fizz such as Noughty or ALT Drinks
Lime wedge
Either a sprig of rosemary or mint for garnish
Method:
This is a straightforward drink to make. Simply pour 30ml of sweetened cranberry juice into the bottom of a champagne flute.
Top the glass up with your alcohol-free champagne or prosecco.
