Busting Myths About Sober Curiosity

Do you ever wonder what life without alcohol would look like? Or wonder if you could do more with your time? Then maybe the sober curious lifestyle is for you.

Sober Curious is a growing movement of people who are curious about life without alcohol. It is about people who are not necessarily wanting to go fully sober but would like to experiment with sobriety or drink left.

In recent years sober curiosity and sobriety have been met with a lot of myths. So we are here to bust some of the common myths about sobriety and sober curiosity.

People Who are Sober Curious are Boring

One of the number one myths about people who choose not to drink alcohol is that they are boring. Many of us have declined a drink at the bar only to be told “Don’t be such a party pooper, you are so boring”. But there is absolutely nothing boring about not needing alcohol to have a good time!

If you are able to live a fulfilling and fun life without alcohol then you are far from boring. Just like drinking alcohol doesn’t automatically make you and fun and interesting person, not drinking does not make you boring.

Sober Curious People Don’t Want to Be Invited to Parties

There is a myth that people who don’t drink alcohol or are sober curious do not want to go to parties. And for some people that is definitely the case. But for many people parties are just as fun with or without alcohol. You can still have a nice conversation, meet new people, and dance the night away without alcohol.

What’s more, people who are sober or sober curious often still want to be invited to parties. That way they can decide for themselves if they want to go to the party or not. But they still feel included and appreciated by their friends and acquaintances. So keep inviting us even if we don't drink alcohol!

Sober People Are Always Willing to be Designated Driver

More often than not the job of designated driver falls to those who don’t drink. And in many ways, this makes a lot of sense. However, just because people do not drink alcohol does not mean that they always want to be the designated driver.

Ideally, when choosing a designated driver, it is best not to assume that the sober person will drive. It is always fine to ask them but accept if the answer is no, and someone else might have to drive. Otherwise, it can start to feel like a frustrating obligation.

Everyone Becomes Sober or Sober Curious Due to Addiction

The idea that anyone who does not drink alcohol has chosen not to due to addiction is prevalent. However, there are so many reasons besides addiction as to why someone might not drink. For example:

  • Illness or disability

  • Medication

  • They don’t like the taste of alcohol

  • Sober curiosity

  • Religion

  • Money

And that is just to name a few different reasons.

To Be Sober Curious You Must Completely Quit Alcohol

Many people think being sober curious requires you to fully quit drinking alcohol. In reality, sober curiosity is a movement of people who are curious about the effects of not drinking but it does not require you to fully give up drinking.

Sober curious looks different for each individual. For some people it might be drinking only on one day of the week, for others, it may be drinking far more mindfully, and for some people it does look like full sobriety. It is always about making conscious choices regarding your alcohol consumption.

Sober Curious People Don’t Need Interesting Drinks

When you cut down on alcohol people often assume that you are happy drinking endless soft drinks or tea and coffee. But people who are sober or sober curious want to enjoy interesting drinks and play around with flavour combinations too.

With the increase in sobriety and sober curious lifestyles, the alcohol-free market is really booming. And that is no coincidence. People who do not drink alcohol want more adult, sophisticated and interesting alcohol-free alternatives. And now, with such a vast and diverse alcohol-free beverage market, that is available.
