Atopia Spirits: An Elevated Moderate Drinking Experience

What is Atopia?

Atopia Spirits are low-alcohol spirits that are distilled with natural ingredients and blended with natural flavours. These are alcohol-free gin-like drinks but qualify as a spirit in their own right. Atopia Spirits contain only 0.5% alcohol. This means that an Atopia and tonic has 75 times less alcohol in it than a standard gin and tonic.

Atopia Spirits were created with the intention of “elevating the moderated drinking experience”. They wanted to create a nuanced and flavourful drink that would appeal to the increasing numbers of mindful drinkers. After all, just because you drink alcohol mindfully, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t get to enjoy delicious drinks too.

Who Created Atopia?

Why did we know that Atopia Spirits would taste good before we tried them? Because they were created by  Lesley Gracie, an award-winning distiller, who also happens to be the master distiller at Hendricks Gin.

Lesley Gracie, a master distiller, experiments with all sorts of flavours and scents to create the perfect, layered drinks. How does she do it? Using smell - which she sees as an incredibly important way of transporting you to different times and places.

Lesley’s experiments with different botanicals have created a huge range of popular alcoholic gins over the years. It is very exciting that she has now turned her hand towards creating alcohol-free spirits that are full and flavourful.

Which Atopia Spirit Flavours Are Available?

There are currently three flavours of Atopia available. There is Atopia Rhubarb and Ginger. This beautiful pink liquid mixes the tangy and crisp flavour of rhubarb with the warm and gentle flavour of ginger. Mixed together this combination creates a perfect balance of flavours.

Atopia Hedgerow Berry flavour channels the smells and flavours of the English countryside. It contains a mixture of hedgerow berries such as blackberries and rosehips alongside a hint of spice.

Atopia Spiced Citrus combines the fresh, citrussy flavours of lemon and oranges with coriander, angelica root and juniper. Slight spice, wormwood and orange blossom add layers of complexity and nuance to the spirit.

How Can You Best Enjoy Atopia Spirits?

Atopia Spirits have such depth and nuance in flavour that you don’t really need to do much with them to make a delicious and refreshing drink.

For a great drinking experience serve the Rhubarb and Ginger spirit as a spritz. To drink this simply add tonic water. Atopia recommends mixing it with Fever Tree Raspberry and Rhubarb Tonic. You can then garnish it with a rhubarb curl to enjoy a refreshing but zingy drink.

Top the Atopia Hedgerow Berry Spirit with tonic water and garnish with blackberries and a lemon slice to get the perfect, simple yet delicious, Atopia and tonic.

To enjoy the full citrus flavour of the Spiced Citrus Atopia, Atopia recommends making a Spiced Citrus Sour. To do this all you need to do is add the spirit, lemon juice, rhubarb bitters and an egg white to a shaker and shake. Shake again with ice and strain to serve in a coupe glass.

These are, however, only recommendations and you can enjoy each of these spirits in a plethora of different ways. The only limit is your imagination.
