Alcohol-Free Cocktails that Sound Scary But Taste Great

It’s that time of year again. It’s spooky season! So what better way to give your friends a bit of a Halloween scare (while avoiding that hangover spooks) than with an alcohol-free cocktail? These alcohol-free cocktail combinations sound scary but actually taste great. So read on for some spooky and surprising alcohol-free cocktail combinations.

My Spooky Spritz

Slightly bitter, slightly sweet and can be decorated with whatever spooky treats you have! This can be enjoyed as a long drink or in a shot glass for an aperitif as you welcome guests.

Ingredients

  • Aperitif such as Wilfred’s (50ml in a tall glass or 10ml in a shot glass)

  • Soda water or lemonade.

  • Raspberries, lime and sugar

Method

  1. Take a tall glass if serving as a long drink or a shot glass if serving as a welcome aperitif and dip the rim in lime juice so it is coated.

  2. In a bowl muddle a raspberry until it is pulp and mix with sugar so you are left with a red sugar. *You can also mix with some beetroot juice to get this effect.

  3. Now dip your glass in the red sugar.

  4. Pour your Wilfred’s in and top with soda or lemonade. Add ice if in a tall glass.

Coke and Alcohol-Free Beer

While this alcohol-free mix of cola and non-alcoholic beer is not technically a cocktail, it is terrifying. It may sound like an odd combination to us in the UK, but it is a common drink known as Colaweizen and found in many areas of Germany.

Ingredients

  • Alcohol-free beer of choice (UNLTD or Spirit beers work well)

  • Cola (Fritz or Karma cola)

Method

  1. Pour half a beer glass of cola.

  2. Top it with an alcohol-free beer of your choice.

  3. Enjoy!

Tamarind Mezcal Mule

Tamarind? In a drink?! Sounds a little spooky! While it may sound unusual, tamarind is the perfect ingredient for an alcohol-free cocktail. It is sweet, sour, tangy, lemony, and sugary and caramel all at once. Balance that with the smokiness of an alcohol-free Mezcal or agave-based drink and create a delicious alcohol-free cocktail.

Ingredients

  • 25ml of Fluere Smoked Agave (or an alcohol-free Mezcal)

  • 25ml of tamarind juice

  • Ginger beer (Karma Drinks, Double Dutch or Bodha Drinks)

  • Chilli to flavour (optional)

Method

  1. Add ice, tamarind juice and alcohol-free smoked agave spirit to a shaker. Shake until cooled.

  2. Strain into a glass. Top this with cooled ginger beer.

  3. At this point, you can stir in some chilli if you choose to.

  4. If not, serve with a lime wedge and enjoy!

Sauerkraut Martini

Now this alcohol-free cocktail might be polarising. But don’t give up on it just yet. If you are someone who loves a Dirty Martini, this unusual drink might surprise you. After all, sauerkraut brine is the new pickle juice?!

Not only is it spooky enough for Halloween, but it is also the perfect alcohol-free cocktail to enjoy during Oktoberfest.

Ingredients

  • 50 ml alcohol-free New London Light First Light

  • 50 ml sauerkraut juice (strained from fermented sauerkraut)

  • Ice

Method

  1. Add your alcohol-free gin and sauerkraut juice to a shaker filled with ice. You can change the 1:1 ratio to suit your taste.

  2. Shake vigorously.

  3. Strain into a martini glass and add an olive or lemon as a garnish.

Ruby Queen

The Ruby Queen alcohol-free cocktail has an unusual combination of ingredients for a cocktail. Its bright pink colour and creative ingredients might well fill you with fear, but once you’ve taken a sip, you might find that the Ruby Queen rivals the Bloody Mary as your favourite savoury cocktail.

Ingredients

  • 45 ml alcohol-free whiskey such as Mahala Amber or Crossip Dandy

  • 30 ml fresh beetroot juice

  • 20 ml honey syrup (1:1 water and honey)

  • 20 ml lemon juice

  • Fresh dill or tarragon

Method

  1. Add all your ingredients (except the garnish) to an ice-filled shaker.

  2. Shake well until everything is well mixed.

  3. Strain into a glass and garnish with dill or tarragon.

Wasabi Martini

Oooh spicy! Wasabi is an excellent ingredient for a harmless Halloween prank. It puts the trick into 'trick or treat'! But why waste it when you can make a delicious and interestingly flavoured and spooky alcohol-free cocktail with it instead?

Typically Wasabi Martinis are made using alcohol-free vodka, but you can choose to use alcohol-free gin for a slightly different nuance to the non-alcoholic cocktail. Or just use what you have in the house.

Ingredients

  • 3 slices cucumber

  • 1 dollop of wasabi paste (pea-sized unless you want a real kick!)

  • 12 ml simple syrup (1:1 water and sugar)

  • 45 ml alcohol-free gin such as New London Light First Light

  • 12 ml lemon juice

Method

  1. Muddle your slices of cucumber, the wasabi paste and syrup on the bottom of a cocktail shaker.

  2. Add ice, alcohol-free vodka or gin and lemon juice.

  3. Shake very well.

  4. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with a slice of cucumber.
